HEP came to my house in Lenoir City to repair (put back in place) some vinyl soffit pieces on the roof over hang. I had several of these around the house and most were high off the ground. Stephen Lemoine was EXCELLENT. Stephen was knowledgeable, courteous, completed the repair in less time than I expected, and gave me additional needed information without trying to over sell. The pricing was fair. I would recommend HEP and Stephen in particular. By the way, it was maybe the hottest day of the year but Stephen didn't let that hinder the work.🙂

The service was very fast. We had a technician out to check our furnace and he kindly informed us they no longer make the parts that we would need, which is understandable as the unit was manufactured in 1997. They were able to get a team out the very next day to install a new HVAC unit and furnace, these gentlemen worked extremely hard from daylight to dark finally finishing up around 9 PM. They had everything up and running and we’re so quiet and thorough. I barely knew they were there! We did have an issue with the unit cooling after start up. I called the following morning and had a technician out within a few hours that fixed the issue. Overall, the entire process was extremely easy, fast, and thorough. We have a roofing project to begin next week with this company as well and only expect great things going forward!

Spoke with Jason and was very happy. This was an estimate for roofing repairs, Jason was very polite and professional. He took the time to point out any issues he found and had a valid explanation for each concern. Jason answered all my questions and I feel he was honest and didn't sugar coat or inflate any concern. We have used Hep in the past for plumbing and was happy with that too. We have another estimate to get but its going to be hard to be the confidence I feel in Jason after our talk. We had some interior ceiling repair also by Tom and Jimmy, excellent job. Impressed with the texture matching.

José is the man of the month. Kind friendly thorough. We were on the struggle bus to get repairs done properly by other companies before calling Hep. José was here next day & had all 3 major issues repaired in hours . Mind you it is mid july & miserable out . He had the best attitude. We will be requesting him again for our next property restoration project! Thank you! HEP has earned our future business as well.

Roofing Done Right in Charleston: How HEP Elevates Every Shingle, Seam, and System

Charleston’s coastal beauty comes with sun-saturated summers, salt-laden breezes, sudden downpours, and the occasional tropical gale. Homeowners and property managers know that a roof in the Holy City must be more than an aesthetic accent; it has to be a high-performance shield. HEP’s “Roofing Done Right” approach delivers the robust protection Lowcountry structures need while enhancing curb appeal and long-term value.

The Coastal Climate Challenge

Charleston roofs endure unique environmental stressors:

  • Intense ultraviolet radiation that dries out asphalt binders
  • Persistent humidity encouraging algae and mildew growth
  • Salt air accelerating corrosion of metal fixtures
  • Heavy rain events testing underlayment, flashing, and gutter capacity
  • Seasonal hurricane threats producing uplift forces far above code minimums

HEP engineers each roofing system to resist these forces from day one, ensuring durable performance rather than premature repairs or full replacement.

HEP’s Roofing Done Right Framework

Roofing excellence is never accidental. HEP follows a structured framework combining materials science, craftsmanship, and process discipline.

1. Comprehensive Roof Assessment

Before any shingle is lifted, the team conducts a multi-point inspection that documents:

  • Deck integrity, looking for hidden moisture damage or rot
  • Attic ventilation efficiency to reduce heat buildup
  • Flashing condition at chimneys, dormers, valleys, and wall junctions
  • Existing fastener patterns to gauge uplift resistance
  • Gutter and downspout performance affecting roof edge longevity

Advanced moisture meters, infrared imaging, and drone photography give technicians a data-rich perspective that informs material selection and scope of work.

2. Local Code Mastery and Beyond

Charleston County and surrounding municipalities maintain stringent roofing codes, especially for wind uplift. HEP doesn’t stop at baseline compliance; every “Roofing Done Right” project is designed to exceed requirements by:

  • Using enhanced nailing schedules on asphalt shingles
  • Specifying thicker gauge metal panels for standing seam applications
  • Integrating self-adhering underlayment in vulnerable zones: eaves, rakes, and valleys
  • Reinforcing ridge areas with additional decking fasteners

3. Material Selection for Lowcountry Resilience

A roof is only as resilient as the products that comprise it. HEP’s supply chain partnerships guarantee premium, climate-tuned materials such as:

  • Architectural shingles with algae-resistant copper granules
  • Class 4 impact-rated shingles to resist wind-borne debris
  • Galvalume and Kynar-coated metal panels for superior salt-spray performance
  • Synthetic underlayments that remain stable in high humidity conditions
  • High-density ridge vents designed for hurricane-force winds

Craftsmanship That Sets a High Bar

Tools and products matter, but workmanship determines service life. HEP cultivates a crew culture focused on precision, cleanliness, and safety.

On-Site Protocols That Protect Homeowners

  • Magnetic rollers to collect stray nails daily
  • Protective coverings on landscaping and exterior walls
  • OSHA-compliant harnesses and anchors for every installer
  • Real-time photo documentation for property owners’ peace of mind

Flashing: The Unsung Hero

More roofs fail at flashing intersections than at field shingles. HEP’s flashing methodology includes:

  • Fabricating custom apron and step flashing from corrosion-resistant metal
  • Sealing fasteners with high-grade butyl rather than conventional sealants that crack over time
  • Counterflashing masonry to create a secondary water stop

Ventilation and Insulation: Twin Pillars of Performance

Charleston’s mixed-humid climate punishes attics without proper airflow. HEP balances intake and exhaust ventilation to maintain roof deck temperatures and prevent moisture accumulation.

Balanced Systems in Practice

  • Continuous soffit vents paired with shingle-over ridge vents create a convection loop
  • Baffles ensure insulation does not block airflow at the eaves
  • In retrofit scenarios, low-profile edge vents supplement limited soffit space

Effective ventilation reduces cooling costs, minimizes shingle blistering, and slows metal expansion cycles that loosen fasteners.

Roofing Styles and Aesthetic Options

While performance remains paramount, Charleston homeowners often seek historically compatible or contemporary looks. HEP’s design consultants help clients navigate:

Asphalt Architectural Shingles

  • Wide color palette to complement traditional pastel facades
  • Dimensional profiles that mimic cedar shake without intensive upkeep
  • Manufacturer warranties extending up to 50 years

Standing Seam Metal

  • Sleek lines suitable for modern infill projects on the peninsula
  • Reflective coatings lowering indoor temperatures in summer
  • Concealed fastener systems guarding against saltwater corrosion

Synthetic Slate and Shake

  • Lightweight composition reduces structural load on older homes
  • UV inhibitors prevent fading even under relentless Lowcountry sun
  • Molded textures replicate hand-split cedar or quarried slate for historic districts

The Installation Sequence: Step by Step

HEP’s “Roofing Done Right” sequence follows a repeatable path that keeps surprises to a minimum.

  1. Site Preparation

    • Temporary fencing establishes a debris containment perimeter
    • Delivery of dumpsters and staging of materials ensures workflow efficiency
  2. Tear-Off and Deck Inspection

    • Shingles removed down to bare wood decking
    • Any compromised sheathing replaced with code-approved paneling
  3. Underlayment and Ice-Water Shield Application

    • Self-adhering membrane installed along eaves and in valleys
    • Synthetic underlayment rolled out with staggered overlaps for watertight coverage
  4. Flashing and Drip Edge Installation

    • Galvanized drip edge fastened at perimeter to direct water into gutters
    • Pipe boots replaced with new EPDM collars resistant to UV breakdown
  5. Field Material Installation

    • Shingles or panels laid in manufacturer-recommended patterns
    • Pneumatic nailers calibrated to drive fasteners flush without damaging mats
  6. Ridge and Hip Treatment

    • Pre-bent ridge caps or specialty hip/ridge shingles installed for added dimension
    • Vent strip positioned beneath ridge material for continuous airflow
  7. Final Walkthrough and Debris Removal

    • Ground crew conducts magnet sweep
    • Superintendent verifies fastening counts, pattern alignment, and sealant detail

Waterproofing Beyond the Roof Plane

Water infiltration often begins at ancillary components. HEP integrates solutions that work in harmony with new roofing.

Gutters and Downspouts

  • Seamless aluminum systems custom-fabricated on site decrease joint leaks
  • Oversized 6-inch profiles handle Lowcountry cloudbursts
  • Hidden hangers protect fascia aesthetics while resisting uplift

Skylight Reflashing

  • Curb-mount skylight kits installed with continuous ice-water membrane
  • Aluminum or copper step flashing prevents capillary action intrusion

Chimney Caps and Cricket Framing

  • Stainless steel caps eliminate spark escape while deterring wildlife nesting
  • Crickets divert runoff around wide chimneys, reducing ponding and leaks

Maintenance Plans for Extended Roof Life

After installation, a proactive regimen keeps Charleston roofs at peak condition. HEP offers structured maintenance plans featuring:

  • Annual roof and gutter inspections timed before hurricane season
  • Moss, algae, and lichen removal using eco-friendly cleaning solutions
  • Sealant touch-ups on penetrations to preempt UV fatigue
  • Minor shingle replacement or fastener tightening as needed

Such maintenance can add 5–10 years to a roof’s life, delaying large-scale expenditure and preserving property value.

Advanced Diagnostic Technology: Seeing Beyond the Shingles

Modern roofing requires more than visual checks. HEP integrates advanced diagnostic tools that reveal hidden threats long before they evolve into costly damage.

Drone Mapping for Safer Surveys

  • High-resolution aerial imagery captures 100% of the roof surface without foot traffic
  • Photogrammetry software creates precise slope and drainage models
  • Real-time data sharing enables architects, engineers, and property owners to collaborate remotely

Moisture Detection With Smart Sensors

Moisture intrusion can remain concealed inside insulation layers. HEP deploys:

  • Wireless humidity and temperature sensors embedded beneath shingles
  • Infrared thermography scans identifying cool spots that signal trapped water
  • Predictive analytics dashboards flagging anomalies so technicians can intervene early

By combining aerial insights with sensor-driven analytics, HEP tailors maintenance schedules and material choices to each roof’s evolving condition.

Seasonal Maintenance Milestones for Lowcountry Roofs

Charleston’s climate shifts rapidly. A structured calendar helps homeowners stay ahead of potential issues:

  • Early Spring:

    • Inspect ridge vents for winter storm debris
    • Clear gutters before pollen season to prevent acidic buildup
  • Late Summer:

    • Check fasteners and sealants after thermal expansion peaks
    • Evaluate attic insulation to maintain barrier against tropical heat
  • Autumn:

    • Remove leaf accumulation in valleys and behind chimneys
    • Verify shingle granule retention as heavy rains resume
  • Pre-Hurricane Season Anytime Between May and October:

    • Secure loose flashing and edge metal
    • Photograph current roof condition for potential insurance documentation

Consistent adherence to these checkpoints dramatically reduces emergency repairs and lengthens overall roof life.

Energy Efficiency and Sustainability Initiatives

HEP’s sustainability ethos aligns with Charleston’s green building initiatives.

Cool Roof Technologies

  • High-reflectivity coatings on metal panels reduce solar heat gain
  • CRRC-rated asphalt shingles meet Energy Star standards, lowering HVAC loads

Recyclable and Reclaimed Materials

  • Tear-off asphalt shingles diverted to local pavement recycling programs
  • Metal offcuts collected for smelting and reuse

Integrated Solar Readiness

  • Roof decks reinforced to support photovoltaic arrays
  • Conduit pathways pre-planned beneath shingles, avoiding later penetrations

Safety: A Non-Negotiable Priority

Construction safety in Charleston’s densely developed areas is paramount. HEP’s safety matrix incorporates:

  • Daily tailgate meetings reviewing site-specific hazards
  • Color-coded lanyards and anchors ensuring each technician ties off appropriately
  • Ladder stabilizers and extension guards meeting ANSI A14 standards

Compliance with safety protocols not only protects personnel but also shields property owners from liability exposure.

Warranties That Matter

Manufacturer warranties cover material integrity, while HEP backs installation workmanship with its own guarantee. A single point of accountability gives homeowners confidence that future concerns will be resolved swiftly and professionally.

Transferability

Many Charleston properties change hands as the city’s real estate market thrives. HEP’s warranty structure is designed to transfer smoothly, adding tangible value at resale.
