What our customers say

HEP was prompt in getting our job estimated and starting work. We had them replace a patio roof and perform some other minor repairs on the roof. They came out on Saturday, and Jason walked through everything, explaining the rationale behind his recommendations. They were exactly in line with existing recommendations from our home inspection, so I had confidence that he was giving his honest opinion and not just trying to upsell. Due to a clerical error, they removed our entire roof by accident, but replaced it at no cost. They immediately notified me when this happened and got it rectified right away. They were honest and transparent through the whole process. After the completion of the work, I notified them of a couple of punch list items and they knocked them out quickly without me having to pester or make a scene like you would with a less reputable contractor. This is the kind of contractor that you keep around. Reliable, easy to contact, responsive, and honest. I am a very independent DIYer, but if I can't do it, my first call will definitely be to HEP. . Thanks Jason and everyone at HEP.

HEP is by far one of the best companies, of any kind, I've ever dealt with. We've had HEP replace our HVAC system and just signed contracts with them for some major plumbing repair and a new roof. In our experience with HEP, we've found that they do everything, and they do everything really well. Which is great for us because we don't have to waste any time going through the giant pain process of finding contractors and then finding out if we can trust them. With HEP, the whole experience is like working with your brothers and sisters. Everyone we've met has gone out of their way to make us feel like we're part of their family. To me, the kind of quality service you get from that kind of a business relationship is worth its weight in gold. Thank you, HEP!

We (Leroy and Helen Queen, my parents) had our leaky roof replaced by HEP at the end of July 2019. We had a wonderful experience from start to finish: from Joshua who recommended HEP for our roofing needs, to Jason our Sales Rep who measured and then inspected the finished work, to Chris in the office who helped us with the financing, to the crew of men that came out and did a marvelous job removing, installing, and then tidying up afterwards. We were mightily impressed; they worked so quickly. We highly recommend giving HEP a call for your roofing needs based on our own experience with them. They all worked really hard and quickly to get us a new roof; something we very greatly appreciate. Thanks HEP!

Introducing HEP’s Specialized Roof Replacement Service in Philadelphia

HEP has become synonymous with dependable roof replacement in Philadelphia, combining advanced installation techniques with an intimate understanding of local building codes and weather challenges. By centering every project on structural integrity, material longevity, and neighborhood aesthetics, HEP delivers roofing solutions that protect homes while elevating curb appeal.

Why Roof Replacement Is Often Preferable to Repeated Repairs

Chronic leaks, shingle deterioration, and underlying deck damage often prompt homeowners to weigh the merits of patchwork repairs against a full roof replacement. In many Philadelphia neighborhoods, aging rowhomes and detached houses feature roofing systems that have reached the limit of practical repair. Replacing the entire roofing assembly ensures:

  • Uniform waterproofing across every plane, ridge, and valley
  • Elimination of concealed moisture intrusion that might be missed during isolated fixes
  • Alignment with updated building codes and ventilation standards
  • Longer manufacturer warranties that typically accompany a complete system installation

By choosing roof replacement, property owners sidestep the cycle of escalating repair costs and recurring disruption. HEP focuses on holistic solutions that reset the life expectancy of the entire roofing structure.

The Philadelphia Climate: A Crucial Factor in Roof Design

Seasonal Stressors

Philadelphia experiences hot, humid summers that impose solar heat gain on roofing surfaces, followed by icy winters where freeze–thaw cycles pry at seams and shingles. Spring and fall bring driving rain and gusty winds. Each season introduces unique challenges:

  • UV degradation during prolonged summer sun exposure
  • Snow loading in January and February that tests truss strength
  • Wind uplift during nor’easters that target improperly secured flashing
  • Heavy rain events that exploit poor drainage and clogged gutters

HEP engineers roof replacement solutions that match these stressors with resilient material choices and specialized installation protocols.

Material Selection for Local Conditions

HEP’s material roster balances thermal performance, wind resistance, and moisture control:

  • Architectural asphalt shingles engineered for hail impact ratings and algae resistance
  • Standing seam metal panels coated to resist fading under high UV index days
  • EPDM and TPO membranes for low-slope sections common on many South Philadelphia rowhouse add-ons
  • Synthetic underlayments that outperform traditional felt by resisting moisture saturation during storm events

By pairing each roofing substrate with compatible underlayment, fasteners, and ventilation accessories, HEP maximizes functional lifespan in the Philadelphia climate.

The HEP Step-By-Step Roof Replacement Process

1. Structural and Decking Assessment

HEP initiates every Philadelphia roof replacement with a thorough inspection, measuring deck deflection, truss spacing, and sheathing integrity. Moisture meters verify whether existing plywood has absorbed water beyond acceptable thresholds. Any compromised decking receives immediate replacement, ensuring that new materials are anchored to a sound substructure.

2. Customized Scope of Work

After inspection, HEP drafts a written scope detailing:

  • Tear-off requirements
  • Material specifications down to shingle brand and gauge of metal flashing
  • Ice and water shield placement zones
  • Ventilation upgrades (ridge vents, soffit vents, or mechanical solutions)
  • Expected project timeline broken into demolition, dry-in, and final installation phases

Aligning homeowner expectations with an itemized plan minimizes onsite surprises and streamlines daily workflow.

3. Site Protection and Tear-Off

To safeguard landscaping, siding, and walkways:

  • Protective plywood sheets line exterior walls
  • Landscape netting captures falling debris
  • Magnetic rollers sweep the perimeter for stray nails

HEP crews methodically remove shingles, underlayment, and flashings down to bare decking. Material separation for recycling reflects HEP’s sustainability commitments.

4. Deck Repairs and Reinforcements

Any delaminated plywood panels or split planks are replaced with code-compliant sheathing. Where past remodeling projects have introduced new load paths—such as added skylights or roof decks—HEP installs sistered rafters and additional blocking for enhanced structural support.

5. Weatherproof Underlayment System

HEP applies self-adhering ice and water membrane along eaves, valleys, and penetrations such as chimneys. Above that, synthetic underlayment provides a continuous secondary water barrier. This two-layer strategy creates redundancy, critical for Philadelphia’s sporadic freeze–thaw cycles.

6. Flashing and Ventilation Upgrades

Chimney step flashing, counter flashing, and drip edge are fabricated from corrosion-resistant metals. Ridge vents, static box vents, or low-profile turbine vents are added according to attic size and slope geometry, ensuring consistent airflow that minimizes attic heat buildup and moisture accumulation.

7. Final Roof Cover Installation

Whether installing architectural shingles or standing seam metal panels, HEP follows manufacturer-specified fastener patterns and overlap dimensions. Attention to uniform reveal spacing ensures attractive aesthetics in addition to structural adherence. Hip and ridge caps receive additional sealant to defend against wind-driven rain.

8. Post-Installation Cleanup and Quality Audit

Upon completion, HEP conducts:

  • Photographic documentation of key details (valleys, ridges, penetrations)
  • Infrared scanning where applicable to confirm absent moisture pockets
  • Exhaustive ground sweep for nails and debris

Detailed warranties are registered with material manufacturers, securing extended coverage for the homeowner.

Roofing Materials HEP Commonly Installs in Philadelphia

Architectural Asphalt Shingles

Architectural shingles blend multilayer thickness with dimensional shadow lines, delivering:

  • Enhanced wind resistance up to 130 mph ratings
  • Algae-fighting copper granules to preserve color integrity
  • Broad palette options that match Federal-style townhomes and modern builds alike

Metal Roofing Systems

Standing seam or metal shingle systems outperform traditional roofing in longevity and solar reflectivity. Key benefits include:

  • Lifespan of 40–70 years, reducing eventual landfill waste
  • Kynar-500 coatings that resist chalking and color fade
  • Interlocking seams that shed snow rapidly, reducing structural load

EPDM and TPO Membranes for Low-Slope Sections

Flat or low-slope roofs, prevalent atop many Philadelphia additions, require specialized membranes:

  • EPDM offers exceptional flexibility, ideal for freeze–thaw climates
  • TPO provides high solar reflectance, reducing HVAC load during peak summer temperatures

Composite or Synthetic Slate

Homeowners seeking a classic aesthetic without the weight of natural slate opt for high-tech composites that replicate arched grain and chiseled edges. Advantages involve:

  • Lightweight composition, often under 200 lbs per square
  • Impact resistance suitable for urban hail events
  • Factory coloration that resists UVA degradation

Common Signs Philadelphia Homeowners Should Replace the Roof

Recognizing early indicators of roof failure enables timely planning rather than emergency action:

  • Multiple leak points appearing after moderate rainfall
  • Shingles curling, clawing, or losing granules in downspouts
  • Sagging roof lines indicating compromised decking or joists
  • Staining or mold growth in attic insulation
  • Unusual spikes in energy bills due to lost ventilation efficiency

HEP roof inspectors document each symptom and advise whether repairs or complete replacement will most effectively protect the structure.

Building Codes and Permit Considerations in Philadelphia

International and Local Code Alignment

Philadelphia adheres to the International Residential Code (IRC) with municipal amendments. Key provisions influencing roof replacement include:

  • Maximum of two existing roof layers prior to mandatory tear-off
  • Underlayment ice barrier requirement in areas susceptible to ice dams
  • Minimum fastener penetration length through decking
  • Ventilation ratios that balance intake and exhaust openings

HEP’s project managers handle all permit filings with the Philadelphia Department of Licenses & Inspections, ensuring every roof replacement meets or exceeds outlined standards.

Historical Commission Compliance

Many Philadelphia neighborhoods enjoy historic designations. Roof replacements in these zones must satisfy both structural codes and aesthetic guidelines. HEP navigates:

  • Documentation submission for Historic Commission review
  • Selection of historically appropriate colors, textures, and profiles
  • Installation methods that preserve ornamental cornices and parapet details

Energy Efficiency Gains from Professional Roof Replacement

Beyond immediate waterproofing upgrades, a modern roof can dramatically improve household energy performance. HEP integrates:

  • Cool roof shingles or metal with high Solar Reflectance Index (SRI) ratings to reflect solar heat
  • Ridge and soffit vent combinations that exhaust hot air, relieving HVAC workload
  • Radiant barrier sheathing on applicable projects to reduce attic temperature spikes

Philadelphia’s humid summers and frigid winters render these energy improvements critical for stabilizing interior comfort.

Attic Insulation Integration for Complete System Performance

A roof’s durability correlates directly with proper attic insulation. Excessive heat or moisture trapped below the deck accelerates shingle aging and promotes mold. When HEP replaces a roof, technicians evaluate:

  • Existing R-value of attic insulation versus Department of Energy recommendations
  • Air sealing opportunities around light fixtures and duct penetrations
  • Vapor barrier placement to control indoor moisture migration

Where necessary, insulation specialists top up cellulose or spray foam levels, ensuring the new roof operates within optimal thermal conditions.

Ventilation Strategies Tailored to Philadelphia Housing Stock

Ridge-to-Soffit Passive Ventilation

Common on pitched roofs, ridge vents running the peak paired with continuous soffit intake allow natural convection to expel heat. HEP sets:

  • Net free vent area calculations to minimum 1:150 attic floor area ratio, adjusted to 1:300 where vapor barriers are present
  • Baffling in rafter bays to maintain airflow despite high insulation depths

Low-Profile Box Vents for Rowhomes

Where ridge lines abut neighboring properties, box vents offer vertical exhaust without compromising party-wall integrity. These come in galvanized or powder-coated finishes to withstand coastal air drawn from the Delaware River.

Mechanical Ventilation for Complex Roof Lines

Complex turrets, dormers, or cathedral ceilings sometimes require mechanical solutions. Solar-powered attic fans installed by HEP operate daylight hours, preventing stagnant hot air pockets.

Protecting Philadelphia Masonry with Proper Roofing Integration

Brick and stone facades, hallmark features across Center City and Fishtown, demand precise roof-to-wall flashing. Improper integration risks water entering behind masonry, triggering efflorescence and freeze-thaw spalling. HEP mitigates these risks by:

  • Stepped counter flashing ground into mortar joints and sealed with high-grade polyurethane
  • Through-wall flashing where low-slope membranes intersect parapet walls
  • Cricket fabrication behind wide chimneys to divert water in heavy downpours

Skylight and Solar Panel Coordination during Roof Replacement

HEP routinely synchronizes skylight upgrades and solar panel mounting with roof replacement schedules, eliminating the need for separate penetrations after installation:

  • New curb-mounted skylights receive ice and water shielding that ties seamlessly into shingles or membrane
  • Solar panel stanchions are flashed with raised metal boots, protecting attachment points while ensuring code-compliant load distribution

Integrating these elements during roof replacement in Philadelphia simplifies future maintenance and preserves warranty integrity.

Storm Damage Mitigation and Rapid Response Protocol

Philadelphia’s mid-Atlantic location exposes property to sudden weather events, from microbursts to hailstorms. HEP maintains rapid deployment crews trained in:

  • Emergency tarping to halt water infiltration
  • Photo documentation for insurance purposes
  • Fast-tracking material orders for roofs damaged beyond repair

Post-storm roof replacement restores homeowner peace of mind and fortifies the property against subsequent events.

Sustainable Practices Embedded in Every HEP Roof Replacement

Material Recycling

HEP participates in asphalt shingle recycling initiatives, diverting tons of discarded material from landfills and converting old shingles into roadway paving aggregate.

Low-VOC Adhesives and Sealants

Adhesive selection prioritizes formulations that emit minimal volatile organic compounds, preserving indoor air quality during and after construction.

Cool Roof Technologies

Reflective membrane and high-albedo metal finishing reduce urban heat island effects, helping Philadelphia achieve municipal sustainability targets.

Warranty Coverage and Manufacturer Partnerships

HEP leverages certified installer status with leading roofing manufacturers, granting homeowners access to robust warranty packages:

  • Limited lifetime warranties on architectural shingles covering manufacturer defects
  • Labor and material coverage periods that may outlast standard offerings due to enhanced certification tiers
  • Optional extensions on workmanship backed directly by the manufacturer upon final inspection

Architectural Harmony and Curb Appeal Enhancement

A roof represents approximately 40 percent of a home’s exterior visual profile. HEP’s design consultants guide color, texture, and profile choices that harmonize with architectural styles:

  • Deep slate gray or charcoal shingles for Georgian and Federal facades
  • Weathered wood tones complementing Craftsman bungalows in West Philadelphia
  • Standing seam metal in subtle matte finishes accentuating contemporary renovations

By integrating roofing design with existing masonry, siding, and trim palettes, the completed roof replacement enhances the broader streetscape.

Common Structural Challenges in Philadelphia Roof Replacements

Party Wall Connections

Rowhouses share masonry walls that complicate flashing and parapet work. HEP employs specialized anchoring techniques to:

  • Secure new roof membranes without penetrating neighboring property lines
  • Maintain fire separation integrity mandated by code

Historic Cornices and Decorative Parapets

Restoration-grade carpentry may be necessary where water damage has compromised ornate cornices. HEP crafts replacement elements in pressure-treated lumber or cellular PVC to replicate original detailing while improving moisture resistance.

Roof Deck Additions

Many homeowners retrofit rooftop decks for skyline views. HEP engineers load-bearing platforms and waterproofing assemblies that protect living spaces below while supporting deck structures above.

The Role of Proper Drainage in Roof Longevity

Philadelphia’s frequent rain demands efficient drainage solutions:

  • Oversized gutters matching roof area discharge requirements
  • Seamless gutter fabrication reducing potential leak joints
  • Downspout placement directing water away from masonry foundations

HEP integrates drip edges, gutter apron flashing, and leaf guard options to keep drainage paths clear and functioning.

Fire Safety Provisions in New Roofing Systems

Modern shingles and underlayments carry Class A fire ratings, critical for densely packed urban blocks. HEP follows strict fireblocking guidelines when:

  • Installing through-roof vents adjacent to vertical walls
  • Sealing penetrations around gas flues with intumescent collars

These measures provide added protection against ember drift from nearby structures.

Neighborhood Noise Reduction through Advanced Underlayment

Synthetic underlayments and additional ridge insulation reduce transmission of exterior noise. In bustling Philadelphia corridors, this acoustic buffer contributes to interior tranquility, a subtle yet valuable byproduct of professional roof replacement.

Long-Term Maintenance Guidance for Homeowners

After HEP installs a new roof, proactive care extends its lifespan:

  • Semiannual inspections, particularly after significant storms
  • Prompt clearing of debris from gutters and valleys
  • Avoiding foot traffic unless absolutely necessary and then using padded walkways
  • Monitoring attic humidity to prevent condensation buildup

Following these guidelines preserves manufacturer warranties and maintains optimal performance.

The HEP Difference in Philadelphia Roof Replacement

Technical precision, material expertise, and deep familiarity with Philadelphia’s architectural tapestry converge in every HEP project. From initial consultation through final inspection, each step aligns with the company’s overarching goal: to deliver a roof that safeguards structural integrity, elevates energy efficiency, and enhances the visual character of the home.
