We called Hep for a leaking roof. They were quick to respond and when they came out took photos to show us what needed to be done. The mgr. who had come out to evaluate the job came back to ensure everything he told us was to be done would be done. He checked out the job and we felt secure knowing everything was checked on to have been done correctly and what wasn't was redone right. Would definately reccommend Hep for roof work.

UPDATING THIS REVIEW** Will turned out to be even better than I originally noted. He returned to inform me that my new roof was put down without removing any of the boards below it -- so turned out my problem wasn't related to the roofing job, and in that case, it was going to need to be something I resolved. Since my roof is under warranty, nobody else could fix the problem except for HEP without voiding my warranty. I'm a working, single mom and this year has been so expensive due to home repairs and such. Financially, it's a struggle. Due to being overwhelmed by the news of having yet ANOTHER repair I need to come out of pocket for -- knowing that I really don't have much money to fork out in one sitting -- I honestly got a little emotional. Will proceeded to reach out to get a price for me, and as I expected, the price was more than I had. I inquired about adding the balance to my current finance agreement, but since it had been over 60 days -- that wasn't possible. So I told Will I wouldn't be able to do it. I expected him to basically say okay & leave, but he persisted trying to find an option that was going to work for me. He reached out to another guy (a boss or management of some type, I think), and on my behalf, pleaded for an option. They were able to work something out for me & it really meant a lot to have him persist like that. I definitely appreciate Will (and the management individual that has dealt with me at my worst multiple times now). Definitely have a better overall view of HEP as a whole now. I didn't feel like I was being taken advantage of. I didn't feel like I was being sold something because I didn't know any better. It felt like a real human experience, and I definitely am appreciative!

Tailored Roof Replacement in Kelso: The HEP Approach

Kelso’s picturesque streets and rolling landscapes are a source of local pride, but the Scottish Borders climate can be unforgiving on residential and commercial roofs. Heavy rain, high winds, and rapid temperature shifts gradually weaken roofing systems, leading to leaks, insulation failures, and escalating energy bills. HEP specialises in comprehensive roof replacement services designed for Kelso’s unique weather profile, soil conditions, and architectural styles. By combining advanced installation techniques with locally sourced materials wherever possible, HEP elevates the durability, energy efficiency, and visual appeal of every property it services.

Why Roof Replacement Matters in Kelso

A roof replacement is far more than a cosmetic upgrade in this region. Kelso’s winters are damp and cold, placing persistent strain on shingles, tiles, and sub-structures. Even minor damage can snowball into costly secondary issues:

  • Rotting timber frames due to trapped moisture
  • Compromised insulation causing heat loss
  • Damp patches leading to mould growth
  • Weakened roof decking threatening structural integrity

HEP’s roof replacement programmes tackle each of these challenges, mitigating long-term property damage and safeguarding inhabitants against environmental health hazards.

Signs a Kelso Property Needs a Roof Replacement

Detecting roof decline early saves homeowners and businesses from escalating repairs. HEP’s technicians frequently encounter the following red flags across Kelso and the surrounding villages:

Visual Deterioration

  • Curling or cupping shingles
  • Slipped or cracked slates and tiles
  • Granule loss, leaving bare patches on asphalt shingles
  • Visible daylight through roof boards in loft spaces

Structural and Environmental Indicators

  • Sagging rooflines—often an early sign of timber decay
  • Water stains on internal ceilings or walls
  • Musty odours in attic spaces indicating mould growth
  • Skyrocketing heating costs linked to insulation failure

When two or more of these markers appear simultaneously, a full roof replacement typically offers greater value than repeated patch repairs.

The HEP Roof Replacement Process

HEP follows a meticulous step-by-step procedure developed through years of hands-on work across Kelso’s diverse building stock. Each phase is transparent, allowing property owners to stay informed and confident about the project timeline and outcomes.

h3 Initial Roof Survey and Diagnostic Assessment

A qualified HEP surveyor conducts a comprehensive inspection, documenting:

  • Existing roof covering conditions
  • Integrity of rafters, battens, and decking
  • Loft insulation levels and vapour barrier performance
  • Gutter alignment and downpipe efficiency
  • Chimney flashings and valley joints prone to leakage

Thermal imaging and moisture meters enhance diagnostic accuracy, especially for hidden water ingress. The survey culminates in a detailed, jargon-free report outlining structural findings and recommended actions.

h3 Specification Design and Material Selection

Every roof in Kelso presents distinct design considerations—Victorian terraced houses, modern eco-homes, agricultural outbuildings, and commercial premises each demand tailored specifications. HEP’s design team collaborates with property owners to choose:

  • Roof covering (slate, clay tile, concrete tile, standing seam metal, or high-grade asphalt shingles)
  • Insulation upgrades that meet or exceed current Scottish Building Standards
  • Ventilation enhancements to combat condensation in loft voids
  • Breathable membranes and underlayments suited to local rainfall patterns

Material samples, colour charts, and technical datasheets help clients visualise the final appearance and performance metrics of the proposed system.

h3 Scheduling, Site Preparation, and Safety Measures

Once specifications are approved, HEP’s project managers develop a schedule that minimises disruption. Key preparation steps include:

  • Erecting scaffolding and safety rails compliant with UK health and safety regulations
  • Protecting garden features, driveways, and neighbouring properties with debris netting and temporary coverings
  • Coordinating skip placement for sustainable waste disposal and recycling
  • Briefing on-site teams to adhere to noise-control guidelines, especially in Kelso’s conservation areas

h3 Strip-Out and Decking Evaluation

Old roofing materials are carefully stripped back in sections to prevent unnecessary exposure to the elements. HEP recycles recyclable materials such as metals and clean concrete tiles to reduce landfill contribution. Once the roof deck is fully exposed, a secondary assessment identifies:

  • Rot-infected timber requiring replacement
  • Historical repairs that might conceal deeper structural weakness
  • Locations needing additional bracing or sister rafters for load distribution

h3 Installation of Updated Structural Layers

HEP’s installation teams proceed with precision layering:

  1. Breathable membrane installation to repel water while permitting vapour escape
  2. Counter battens and tile battens fixed using corrosion-resistant nails or screws
  3. Continuous ridge ventilation products added where attic airflow is insufficient
  4. Insulation materials placed or topped up to achieve thermal targets
  5. Flashing and gutter interface upgrades using lead, GRP, or EPDM solutions

h3 Roof Covering Application

The final visible layer is applied according to manufacturer guidelines and Kelso’s aesthetic traditions. Whether laying Scottish slate on heritage cottages or interlocking clay tiles on contemporary homes, HEP ensures:

  • Correct overlap ratios and fixings for wind uplift resistance
  • Uniform courses and alignment for consistent water run-off
  • Ridge and hip tiles secured with dry-fix systems to eliminate mortar failures
  • Edge trims and eaves guards that protect vulnerable perimeters

h3 Post-Installation Quality Assurance

Once the new roof is in place, HEP implements an exhaustive snagging protocol. Laser-level devices check plane accuracy, water tests confirm drainage efficiency, and photographic documentation records the finished state. The homeowner receives a copy of:

  • Material warranties
  • Building regulation compliance certificates
  • Maintenance guidelines tailored to Kelso’s climate

Roofing Materials Best Suited to Kelso Conditions

Material choice significantly influences longevity and performance. HEP’s material portfolio is curated with Kelso’s rainfall patterns, frost cycles, and wind exposure in mind.

h3 Natural Slate

Kelso’s historic architecture frequently relies on natural slate. Key benefits include:

  • Exceptional lifespan, often exceeding 100 years with proper maintenance
  • Low water absorption, reducing freeze-thaw damage
  • Distinctive aesthetic that complements local stonework

HEP sources slates graded for uniform thickness, facilitating installation accuracy and weight distribution.
