We (Leroy and Helen Queen, my parents) had our leaky roof replaced by HEP at the end of July 2019. We had a wonderful experience from start to finish: from Joshua who recommended HEP for our roofing needs, to Jason our Sales Rep who measured and then inspected the finished work, to Chris in the office who helped us with the financing, to the crew of men that came out and did a marvelous job removing, installing, and then tidying up afterwards. We were mightily impressed; they worked so quickly. We highly recommend giving HEP a call for your roofing needs based on our own experience with them. They all worked really hard and quickly to get us a new roof; something we very greatly appreciate. Thanks HEP!

HEP was prompt in getting our job estimated and starting work. We had them replace a patio roof and perform some other minor repairs on the roof. They came out on Saturday, and Jason walked through everything, explaining the rationale behind his recommendations. They were exactly in line with existing recommendations from our home inspection, so I had confidence that he was giving his honest opinion and not just trying to upsell. Due to a clerical error, they removed our entire roof by accident, but replaced it at no cost. They immediately notified me when this happened and got it rectified right away. They were honest and transparent through the whole process. After the completion of the work, I notified them of a couple of punch list items and they knocked them out quickly without me having to pester or make a scene like you would with a less reputable contractor. This is the kind of contractor that you keep around. Reliable, easy to contact, responsive, and honest. I am a very independent DIYer, but if I can't do it, my first call will definitely be to HEP. . Thanks Jason and everyone at HEP.

HEP is by far one of the best companies, of any kind, I've ever dealt with. We've had HEP replace our HVAC system and just signed contracts with them for some major plumbing repair and a new roof. In our experience with HEP, we've found that they do everything, and they do everything really well. Which is great for us because we don't have to waste any time going through the giant pain process of finding contractors and then finding out if we can trust them. With HEP, the whole experience is like working with your brothers and sisters. Everyone we've met has gone out of their way to make us feel like we're part of their family. To me, the kind of quality service you get from that kind of a business relationship is worth its weight in gold. Thank you, HEP!

Roofing Excellence in Newport: How HEP Delivers Superior Roof Replacement

Newport’s coastal position, rolling hills, and changeable weather create a unique set of challenges for any building’s roof. From driving rain and salt-laden winds to sudden temperature shifts, roofs in this part of South Wales endure more stress than many homeowners realize. HEP, an established authority in professional roofing, meets these challenges head-on with a specialized roof replacement service tailored for Newport properties. The following guide takes an in-depth look at how HEP approaches every aspect of roof replacement, showcasing methods, materials, and expertise developed specifically for local conditions.

The Newport Climate and Why Roof Replacement Matters

Newport sits at the mouth of the River Usk, where maritime air frequently collides with inland weather systems. This combination results in:

  • High annual rainfall
  • Periodic gale-force winds
  • Frequent freeze-thaw cycles in winter
  • Elevated humidity year-round
  • Coastal salt exposure in eastern districts

These conditions accelerate roof degradation, making timely roof replacement critical for structural integrity, thermal efficiency, and occupant safety.

HEP’s Local Roofing Insight

HEP’s teams are staffed with technicians who live and work across the Newport region, from Caerleon down to Duffryn and over to Rogerstone. Years of hands-on experience with local architecture—Victorian terraces, semi-detached suburban homes, converted farmhouses, and modern commercial units—give HEP a nuanced understanding of how different roof designs respond to Newport’s climate.

The HEP Roof Replacement Methodology

Replacing a roof is a complex operation that requires meticulous planning and flawless execution. HEP follows a multi-stage process designed to minimize disruption while maximizing long-term performance.

1. Comprehensive Roof Survey

Before any physical work starts, HEP carries out an extensive roof survey. The survey includes:

  • Drone imagery to capture high-resolution aerial views
  • Moisture mapping with infrared thermography
  • Structural load assessment across rafters and trusses
  • Gutter, flashing, and chimney inspection
  • Identification of bio-growth such as moss or lichen

By gathering granular data upfront, HEP develops a precise scope of work tailored to each property.

2. Material Selection and Specification

Material choice is fundamental to roof longevity. HEP’s consultants balance form, function, and environmental impact when recommending materials. Common options include:

  • Slate tiles sourced from Wales and Spain for heritage homes
  • Concrete interlocking tiles for cost-effective durability
  • Clay tiles that complement period architecture
  • Standing seam metal panels for modern builds
  • High-performance synthetic membranes for flat roofs

Every material selected meets British Standard (BS) and European (EN) norms, ensuring structural compliance and wind-uplift resistance suitable for Newport’s gusty winters.

3. Scheduling and Logistical Planning

Newport’s narrow terraced streets and conservation areas often pose logistical hurdles. HEP addresses these constraints by:

  • Coordinating with local authorities for scaffold permits
  • Utilizing compact load-bearing platforms to avoid obstructing pedestrians
  • Implementing waste segregation zones that conform to recycling regulations

A detailed project schedule, shared ahead of commencement, enables residents to anticipate essential milestones.

4. Safe Removal of Existing Roof Coverings

Removal, or “strip-off,” is executed with strict adherence to Health & Safety Executive (HSE) guidelines. Steps include:

  • Erection of perimeter guard rails and debris netting
  • Controlled dismantling from ridge to eaves
  • Asbestos identification and isolation where historical layers are present

All waste streams are catalogued and transported to licensed recycling facilities, supporting Newport’s sustainability objectives.

5. Structural Upgrades and Reinforcement

Once decking is exposed, HEP evaluates structural timbers. Typical reinforcement activities encompass:

  • Replacing compromised rafters with kiln-dried treated timber
  • Installing hangers to redistribute load in extended spans
  • Adding lateral bracing for wind uplift mitigation
  • Integrating vapour control layers to prevent condensation in loft spaces

These measures future-proof the property against storms and extreme temperature swings.

6. Installation of New Roof System

The installation phase varies by roof type.

Pitched Roofs

  • Breathable underlay with high vapour permeability
  • Counter-battens for ventilation pathways
  • Tile or slate fixing using non-corrosive hooks or nails
  • Precision-aligned ridge and hip systems with dry-fix methods

Flat Roofs

  • Tapered insulation boards to optimize drainage
  • Two-part polyurethane adhesive bonding
  • Single-ply membrane or torch-on bitumen layers with hot-air welded seams
  • Edge trims in powder-coated aluminium to resist salt spray

7. Detailing and Weatherproofing

Critical junctions—chimney breasts, skylights, abutments—receive bespoke flashing crafted from lead, GRP, or coated aluminium. Where roofs meet external walls, HEP employs stepped flashing set into mortar chases, ensuring watertight continuity.

8. Quality Assurance and Handover

HEP completes every project with:

  • Photo documentation of hidden layers for homeowner records
  • Post-installation drone survey verifying alignment and finish
  • Manufacturer-approved installation certification
  • Detailed maintenance guidelines

These elements provide peace of mind long after scaffold removal.

Energy Efficiency Gains from Roof Replacement

A new roof delivers measurable improvements to energy consumption.

Insulation Upgrades

HEP fits high-density insulation boards above or below rafters, eliminating thermal bridges. Many Newport homes achieve:

  • Up to 25% reduction in heat loss
  • Enhanced SAP (Standard Assessment Procedure) scores
  • Improved indoor comfort during cold spells

Reflective Surfaces

Metal roofs and light-coloured synthetic membranes reflect solar radiation, lowering attic temperatures in summer and easing demand on cooling appliances.

Signs a Newport Roof Requires Replacement

Homeowners often delay replacement until visible leaks appear, yet earlier indicators warrant attention.

  • Granule loss from asphalt shingles accumulating in gutters
  • Sagging roofline or dipping ridges
  • Persistent condensation in loft spaces even after ventilation improvements
  • Growth of moss indicating moisture retention
  • Flashing corrosion around chimneys or dormer windows
  • Daylight penetration through roof boards visible from attic

HEP’s survey service identifies these symptoms before structural damage escalates.

Safety and Regulatory Compliance

Roof work is classified as high risk. HEP meets stringent standards through:

  • CSCS-certified operatives
  • Weekly toolbox talks covering fall prevention, manual handling, and weather contingencies

Architectural Diversity Across Newport Roofs

Newport’s neighbourhoods display a wide spectrum of roof designs, each presenting unique replacement considerations.

Victorian Terraces

  • Predominantly Welsh slate coverings with ornate clay ridge tiles
  • Steep pitches optimize drainage but require secure scaffold staging
  • Narrow streets dictate lightweight hoisting systems

Post-War Semi-Detached Homes

  • Concrete interlocking tiles common from 1950s developments in Malpas and Alway
  • Broader roof spans benefit from modern breathable membranes
  • Soffit and fascia upgrades often integrated during replacement

Rural Conversions

  • Former barns and farmhouses around Langstone and Ponthir feature large timber trusses
  • Exposed beams necessitate careful removal and replacement sequencing
  • Heritage conservation guidelines influence material selection

Waterproofing Innovations for Flat Roofs in Newport

While pitched roofs dominate domestic housing, flat roofs appear on extensions, dormers, and commercial premises. HEP’s solution set includes:

  • Liquid-applied polyurethane systems forming seamless skins that self-cure even in damp conditions
  • Hot-melt rubber-bitumen hybrids providing immediate rain resistance during installation
  • Inverted warm-roof configurations where insulation lies above waterproofing, protecting membranes from thermal stress

Roof Ventilation: A Pillar of Durability

Inadequate ventilation leads to condensation, timber decay, and mould growth. HEP designs airflow strategies featuring:

  • Eaves vents combined with ridge ventilation delivering continuous air passage
  • Over-fascia vents for properties with limited soffit depth
  • Mechanical extraction in high-humidity interiors such as bathrooms beneath loft spaces

Balanced ventilation maintains stable roof temperatures throughout Newport’s seasonal variations, prolonging membrane life and safeguarding insulation R-values.

Flashings, Valleys, and Gutter Systems

These secondary elements are essential yet often overlooked.

Lead and GRP Flashings

  • Lead offers malleability and longevity, ideal for complex chimney junctions
  • Glass-reinforced plastic (GRP) delivers lightweight, corrosion-proof performance where lead theft risk exists

Valleys

  • Pre-formed aluminium or fibreglass valleys accelerate installation and reduce leak points
  • Under-valley support boards prevent sagging under heavy rainfall

Gutters and Downpipes

  • High-capacity, Ogee-profile gutters manage Newport’s intense downpours
  • Leaf guards mitigate blockages from nearby deciduous trees

Structural Considerations for Solar Integration

The rise in photovoltaic adoption across South Wales means many homeowners now consider future solar compatibility during roof replacement. HEP facilitates:

  • Reinforced rafters or purlins sized to bear extra panel weight
  • Pre-installed mounting anchors flushed with tiles or slates
