What our customers say

HEP is by far one of the best companies, of any kind, I've ever dealt with. We've had HEP replace our HVAC system and just signed contracts with them for some major plumbing repair and a new roof. In our experience with HEP, we've found that they do everything, and they do everything really well. Which is great for us because we don't have to waste any time going through the giant pain process of finding contractors and then finding out if we can trust them. With HEP, the whole experience is like working with your brothers and sisters. Everyone we've met has gone out of their way to make us feel like we're part of their family. To me, the kind of quality service you get from that kind of a business relationship is worth its weight in gold. Thank you, HEP!

We called Hep for a leaking roof. They were quick to respond and when they came out took photos to show us what needed to be done. The mgr. who had come out to evaluate the job came back to ensure everything he told us was to be done would be done. He checked out the job and we felt secure knowing everything was checked on to have been done correctly and what wasn't was redone right. Would definately reccommend Hep for roof work.

We (Leroy and Helen Queen, my parents) had our leaky roof replaced by HEP at the end of July 2019. We had a wonderful experience from start to finish: from Joshua who recommended HEP for our roofing needs, to Jason our Sales Rep who measured and then inspected the finished work, to Chris in the office who helped us with the financing, to the crew of men that came out and did a marvelous job removing, installing, and then tidying up afterwards. We were mightily impressed; they worked so quickly. We highly recommend giving HEP a call for your roofing needs based on our own experience with them. They all worked really hard and quickly to get us a new roof; something we very greatly appreciate. Thanks HEP!

HEP was prompt in getting our job estimated and starting work. We had them replace a patio roof and perform some other minor repairs on the roof. They came out on Saturday, and Jason walked through everything, explaining the rationale behind his recommendations. They were exactly in line with existing recommendations from our home inspection, so I had confidence that he was giving his honest opinion and not just trying to upsell. Due to a clerical error, they removed our entire roof by accident, but replaced it at no cost. They immediately notified me when this happened and got it rectified right away. They were honest and transparent through the whole process. After the completion of the work, I notified them of a couple of punch list items and they knocked them out quickly without me having to pester or make a scene like you would with a less reputable contractor. This is the kind of contractor that you keep around. Reliable, easy to contact, responsive, and honest. I am a very independent DIYer, but if I can't do it, my first call will definitely be to HEP. . Thanks Jason and everyone at HEP.

Key strengths include:

  • Licensed and insured installation teams focused exclusively on roofing
  • Continuous project oversight to maintain timeline, cleanliness, and workmanship quality
  • Proven track record with asphalt shingles, metal systems, synthetic slate, and other advanced materials
  • Strict adherence to Dayton and Montgomery County building regulations

Understanding the Dayton Climate and Its Impact on Roofing

Dayton’s continental climate brings hot, humid summers followed by cold, snowy winters. Rapid temperature swings, freeze-thaw cycles, and severe thunderstorms can accelerate aging in roofing systems. When a roof reaches the end of its service life, minor leaks often become major failures quickly due to saturated decking, ice dams, and wind-driven rain. HEP engineers each roof replacement with the local climate in mind, specifying underlayment combinations, ventilation solutions, and fastening schedules that surpass manufacturer minimums.

Seasonal Challenges Specific to Dayton

  • Summer UV exposure that degrades asphalt shingle binders
  • Heavy rainfall events triggering water infiltration at valley transitions
  • Ice dams along eaves in late winter, stressing flashings and gutters
  • Spring hail impacts that bruise shingles and dent soft metal flashings

The HEP Roof Replacement Process

Every homeowner deserves a clear blueprint before any shingles are removed. HEP’s step-by-step replacement procedure eliminates uncertainty, safeguards landscaping, and ensures the finished roof meets the household’s performance goals.

Step 1 – Detailed Roof Inspection

A certified roof specialist conducts a multi-point examination from ridge to eaves. The inspection notes:

  • Current shingle condition, blistering, curling, and granule loss
  • Flashing integrity at chimneys, vents, and skylights
  • Decking moisture levels, rot indicators, and structural soundness
  • Ventilation pathways from soffit intake to ridge exhaust

Step 2 – Material Selection Tailored to Dayton Homes

HEP collaborates with the homeowner to identify the optimal roofing material. Considerations involve:

  • Architectural style, from mid-century ranch to Victorian
  • Budget tolerance balanced against lifecycle cost
  • Energy-saving priorities in both warm and cold seasons
  • Desired wind and impact resistance ratings

Step 3 – Preparation and Protection of Property

Before demolition starts, HEP shields landscaping, siding, and windows with reinforced tarps and plywood. Magnetic rollers capture stray nails daily, and disposal bins are positioned to minimize lawn disruption.

Step 4 – Precise Removal of Old Roofing Materials

The crew removes existing shingles, underlayment, and flashings, exposing the sheathing. Any compromised decking is replaced with code-approved plywood, ensuring a solid foundation for the new roof system.

Step 5 – Installation of Advanced Underlayment Systems

A high-temperature ice and water shield is applied to vulnerable eave and valley sections, followed by synthetic breathable underlayment across the remaining deck. This layered defense guards against moisture intrusion and condensation.

Step 6 – High-Performance Roofing Material Installation

Shingles or panels are installed using factory-specified fasteners, staggered patterns, and recommended nail placement zones. Starter strips at eaves and rakes create a wind-resistant perimeter, while hip and ridge caps provide a streamlined finish.

Step 7 – Ventilation and Insulation Upgrades

HEP ensures balanced attic ventilation to regulate attic temperatures and prevent moisture buildup. Options include ridge vents, soffit vents, and baffle systems. When needed, HEP coordinates additional attic insulation to complement the new ventilation design.

Step 8 – Finishing Touches and Final Inspection

Accessories such as drip edge, gutter apron, and snow guards (when applicable) are secured, and all flashing seams are sealed. A supervisor then walks the roof, confirming proper fastener counts, straight shingle courses, and intact ventilation paths. A written workmanship record is provided to the homeowner.

Roofing Materials Offered by HEP

Choosing the right material can extend a roof’s service life well beyond the industry average. HEP’s catalog includes durable options engineered for Dayton’s varied weather.

Architectural Asphalt Shingles

These dimensional shingles feature a multi-layered profile for added depth and hail resistance. They:

  • Offer wind warranties up to 130 mph when installed with specified starter strips
  • Contain reflective granules that reduce attic temperatures in summer
  • Present a broad color palette to complement brick, siding, or stone facades

Metal Roofing Systems

Constructed from galvanized steel or aluminum, standing-seam metal roofs deliver:

  • Exceptional longevity, often exceeding 50 years
  • Interlocking panels that channel water away from seams
  • Class A fire ratings and high recyclability at end of life

Synthetic Slate and Shake Alternatives

Engineered composites provide the aesthetic of natural slate or cedar shakes without the weight or maintenance. Key benefits include:

  • Impact ratings ideal for hail-prone neighborhoods
  • Reduced installation time compared with quarried slate
  • Fade-resistant pigmentation that maintains curb appeal

Energy-Efficient Roofing Options

Cool roof technologies incorporate reflective coating systems or inherently light-colored surfaces to lower heat absorption. Dayton homeowners seeking reduced cooling loads in summer can pair these materials with radiant barrier sheathing and optimized attic ventilation for greater energy savings.

Signs Your Dayton Home Needs a Roof Replacement

Delaying replacement can lead to structural damage, mold growth, and increased utility bills. Warning indicators include:

  • Curling shingle edges or cupped tabs visible from the ground
  • Excessive granules in gutters following heavy rain
  • Dark streaks or moss colonies suggesting moisture retention
  • Sagging roof lines caused by saturated decking
  • Interior ceiling stains, especially after wind-driven storms

Benefits of Replacing Your Roof with HEP

An expertly installed roof from HEP offers tangible returns beyond a refreshed exterior.

Unordered list of advantages:

  • Enhanced weather resilience against Dayton’s intense storms
  • Improved home energy efficiency through better insulation and ventilation
  • Elevated property value and greater buyer confidence during resale
  • Reduced maintenance expenses by eliminating chronic leak repairs
  • Peace of mind backed by comprehensive workmanship coverage

Sustainability and Eco-Friendly Practices

HEP integrates environmentally conscious measures across every phase of roof replacement.

Initiatives Include

  • Recycling removed asphalt shingles into asphalt paving material
  • Offering metal roofing with high recycled content and full recyclability
  • Encouraging cool-roof color selections to mitigate urban heat island effects
  • Implementing low-VOC sealants and adhesives for healthier indoor air quality

Maintenance Tips After a Roof Replacement

Even the best roof benefits from routine upkeep. Homeowners can preserve their new roof’s lifespan through simple actions.

Essential Maintenance Tasks

  • Clear leaves and debris from gutters each spring and fall
  • Trim overhanging branches to minimize abrasion and pest ingress
  • Inspect attic for signs of condensation during temperature swings
  • Schedule annual professional check-ups to validate flashing integrity

Common Roof Replacement Challenges in Dayton’s Neighborhoods

Certain Dayton subdivisions present unique logistical or architectural hurdles. HEP’s project managers proactively address:

Unordered list of local considerations:

  • Narrow alley access in historic districts requiring smaller disposal containers
  • Steep roof pitches on early-20th-century homes demanding specialized safety equipment
  • HOA guidelines in planned communities mandating specific shingle profiles
  • Mature tree canopies impeding crane placement for material staging

The Importance of Professional Workmanship Over DIY

Roof replacement is a precision craft involving structural knowledge, weatherproofing science, and rigorous safety protocols. DIY attempts often overlook hidden deck damage, improper flashing techniques, or ventilation imbalances. HEP’s crews mitigate these risks by following manufacturer instructions to the letter, using calibrated pneumatic tools, and conducting interim inspections as installation proceeds. Professional workmanship also ensures warranties remain valid; most manufacturers require certified installers for full coverage.

Building Code Compliance and Permitting in Dayton

Montgomery County Building Regulations mandate permits for roof replacements involving more than 25 percent of the surface area. HEP secures all necessary documentation, schedules mandatory inspections, and submits final compliance records. Code updates often encompass:

  • Minimum underlayment weight and ice barrier coverage
  • Fastener length standards tied to deck thickness
  • Ventilation ratios based on conditioned attic vs. unconditioned space
Adhering to these guidelines shields homeowners from future liability and ensures insurance eligibility.

Warranty and Post-Installation Support

HEP pairs manufacturer product warranties with a robust workmanship guarantee. The coverage activates once final inspection is completed and extends protection against installation defects for the specified term. Post-installation support services include:

  • Complimentary one-year check-up to confirm roof system performance
  • Priority scheduling for any warranty-related repairs
  • Ongoing education resources to aid homeowners in routine maintenance

Preparing Your Roof for Future Solar Panel Installation

Dayton homeowners increasingly explore solar energy as an avenue to lower utility bills and increase property value. Coordinating roof replacement with solar readiness reduces redundant labor, prevents premature penetrations, and streamlines the overall transition to renewable power.

Structural Considerations for Solar Loads

Most asphalt or metal roofs handled by HEP already meet typical panel weight requirements, yet supplemental bracing may be advisable on older rafters or truss systems. During replacement, HEP evaluates:

  • Existing rafter spacing and lumber dimensions
  • Sheathing thickness after any deck repairs
  • Snow-load calculations adjusted for panel coverage

Upgrading structural elements at this stage reduces future costs and ensures the roof assembly confidently supports photovoltaic arrays for decades.

Pre-Installed Conduit and Flashing Paths

Routing electrical conduit after shingles are installed often requires intrusive cuts and exposed sealants. HEP integrates:

  • Conduit chases beneath the final course of shingles for a seamless exit point
  • Pre-flashed junction boxes positioned near the anticipated inverter location
  • Weatherproof caps that maintain a watertight seal until panels are mounted

This foresight maintains the roof’s integrity while simplifying electrician work later.

Optimizing Roof Layout and Orientation

Panel efficiency hinges on unobstructed southern exposure and minimal shading. HEP’s design team analyzes:

  • Chimney placement and vent stacks that could cast shadows
  • Dormer heights and tree lines affecting midwinter sun angles
  • Usable square footage on primary roof planes versus secondary slopes

The result is a roof surface free from unnecessary protrusions, maximizing solar harvest once the homeowner commits to an array.
