HEP was prompt in getting our job estimated and starting work. We had them replace a patio roof and perform some other minor repairs on the roof. They came out on Saturday, and Jason walked through everything, explaining the rationale behind his recommendations. They were exactly in line with existing recommendations from our home inspection, so I had confidence that he was giving his honest opinion and not just trying to upsell. Due to a clerical error, they removed our entire roof by accident, but replaced it at no cost. They immediately notified me when this happened and got it rectified right away. They were honest and transparent through the whole process. After the completion of the work, I notified them of a couple of punch list items and they knocked them out quickly without me having to pester or make a scene like you would with a less reputable contractor. This is the kind of contractor that you keep around. Reliable, easy to contact, responsive, and honest. I am a very independent DIYer, but if I can't do it, my first call will definitely be to HEP. . Thanks Jason and everyone at HEP.

We have used HEP in the past for plumbing and also some roof issues. Because of this, they offered us a free roof inspection. The tech (Tim Lawson) that came out was on time (actually a little earlier than expected), was very helpful and knowledgeable. He took his time to explain the repairs that we will be needing to our roof, offered affordable pricing and was very professional. I would recommend this company as they are fair in price and have knowledgeable, friendly , professional employees. Thanks HEP and Tim Lawson.

We (Leroy and Helen Queen, my parents) had our leaky roof replaced by HEP at the end of July 2019. We had a wonderful experience from start to finish: from Joshua who recommended HEP for our roofing needs, to Jason our Sales Rep who measured and then inspected the finished work, to Chris in the office who helped us with the financing, to the crew of men that came out and did a marvelous job removing, installing, and then tidying up afterwards. We were mightily impressed; they worked so quickly. We highly recommend giving HEP a call for your roofing needs based on our own experience with them. They all worked really hard and quickly to get us a new roof; something we very greatly appreciate. Thanks HEP!

Cleveland’s Unique Roofing Challenges

Roof systems in Cleveland endure a punishing combination of lake-effect snow, swift temperature swings, and seasonal storms. These factors accelerate wear on shingles, flashing, and structural components, making timely roof repair a critical service for homeowners and property managers alike. HEP Company has refined its roof repair approach to match the region’s distinctive climate, ensuring every solution is tailored to local conditions.

Lake-Effect Weather and Roof Deterioration

Lake Erie fuels heavy snowfall that can blanket rooftops with dense, moisture-laden layers. As the snow melts and refreezes, ice dams form along eaves, forcing water beneath shingles and into attic cavities. HEP technicians focus on:

  • Reinforcing vulnerable eave areas with high-grade Ice & Water Shield
  • Verifying the integrity of attic ventilation to reduce ice-dam formation
  • Installing high-profile ridge caps that resist wind-driven snow infiltration

Seasonal Temperature Swings and Material Stress

Cleveland winters plunge below freezing while summers routinely climb into the 80s and 90s. This expansion–contraction cycle weakens roofing materials, causing premature cracking and fastener loosening. HEP addresses thermal stress by:

  • Selecting shingles engineered with flexible asphalt blends
  • Applying sealants rated for extreme temperature fluctuations
  • Inspecting fastener patterns and upgrading to corrosion-resistant nails

HEP Company: Expertise in Roof Repair

Certified Craftsmen and Specialized Training

Every HEP roof technician completes manufacturer-approved certification programs covering asphalt, metal, and low-slope systems. Regular workshops keep crews current on Cleveland building codes, ventilation standards, and storm-damage assessment guidelines. This commitment to ongoing training positions HEP as a premier provider of roof repair in Cleveland.

Comprehensive Roof Assessment Protocol

HEP’s repair projects begin with a structured evaluation that combines visual inspection, moisture mapping, and drone-based imagery. The goal is to uncover both obvious and hidden deficiencies so that repairs permanently resolve the underlying issue rather than offering a temporary patch.

  • Interior attic inspection for water staining and mold
  • Infrared scanning to locate trapped moisture beneath underlayment
  • Drone flyovers capturing high-resolution images of ridge lines and valleys
  • Detailed documentation for homeowners and insurance adjusters

Common Roof Problems Addressed by HEP

Leaks Around Penetrations

Plumbing vents, skylights, and chimneys create natural weak points in any roofing system. Flashing can shift during wind events or deteriorate from UV exposure. HEP technicians replace compromised flashing with heavy-gauge metal, apply long-life sealants, and integrate step-flashing into surrounding shingles to restore watertight integrity.

Shingle Granule Loss

In Cleveland’s frequent hailstorms, asphalt shingles can lose protective granules, leaving the asphalt layer exposed. Signs include excessive granules in gutters or dark patches on the roof surface. HEP evaluates the extent of loss and performs targeted shingle replacement or applies rejuvenating coatings when appropriate.

Flashing Failure at Valleys and Eaves

Valleys funnel massive volumes of water during downpours. If the valley flashing cracks or corrodes, leaks rapidly develop. HEP uses pre-bent, rust-resistant metal flashing secured with rubberized underlayments to create a durable water channel.

Storm Damage from Wind and Hail

Sudden gusts off Lake Erie can lift shingles or drive hail stones that puncture membrane roofs. HEP’s storm response teams prioritize:

  • Tarping exposed decking to halt interior water entry
  • Documenting damage for insurance reporting
  • Rapid shingle, tile, or membrane replacement to restore defense layers

Specialized Repair for Different Roof Types

Asphalt Shingle Systems

Architectural shingles remain Cleveland’s dominant roofing material because they balance affordability with respectable wind and hail ratings. HEP’s shingle repairs emphasize precise color matching, maintaining consistent ridge profile, and resealing adhesive strips for uniform wind resistance.

Metal Roofing Panels

Standing-seam metal roofs shed snow effectively but can suffer from fastener back-out and panel oil-canning after severe temperature fluctuations. HEP technicians replace worn butyl sealant tape, tighten or upgrade fasteners to washer-head screws, and apply specialized coatings that correct minor surface distortion without panel replacement.

Low-Slope and Flat Membranes

Commercial facilities and certain modern homes utilize EPDM, TPO, or modified-bitumen systems. HEP repairs include:

  • Seam re-welding using hot-air equipment for TPO
  • EPDM patch installation with tape primer and cover strip
  • Granule-surfaced cap-sheet repairs on modified roofs using compatible mastics

Cedar and Specialty Roofs

Although less common, historic districts feature cedar shake and slate. HEP’s crews receive material-specific training to ensure:

  • Stainless-steel ring-shank nails for cedar replacements
  • Slate hook systems to secure new slates without disrupting surrounding tiles
  • Gentle roof washing techniques that protect natural finishes

Residential vs. Commercial Roof Repair Considerations

Residential Strengths

Most Cleveland homes have steep-slope designs with multiple ridges, valleys, and penetrations. HEP’s residential crews are adept at:

  • Navigating complex multi-pitch architecture
  • Protecting landscaping and siding during material removal
  • Coordinating interior access when attic checks are needed

Commercial Complexities

Flat or low-slope roofs on retail centers, warehouses, and office buildings present different challenges:

  • Larger square footage requires strategic staging zones
  • HVAC curbs and rooftop equipment necessitate specialized flashing details
  • Compliance with energy-code reflectivity standards for commercial membranes

The Roof Repair Process Step by Step

Inspection and Documentation

Technicians record existing conditions, noting shingle type, pitch, decking material, and ventilation status. Digital photos and annotated diagrams ensure transparency and project clarity.

Material Selection

HEP sources materials from leading manufacturers offering products engineered for northern climates. Selections consider color match, wind resistance ratings, and compatibility with existing roofing layers.

Repair Implementation

Crews follow a systematic sequence:

  • Remove damaged shingles or membrane sections
  • Replace compromised decking as needed
  • Install ice-and-water barrier where leaks originated
  • Fit new shingles or membrane, aligning with manufacturer guidelines

Final Quality Check

A post-repair audit verifies proper fastener placement, sealant cure times, and aesthetic blending. All debris is cleared, and gutters are checked to ensure no loose nails or granules remain.

Materials Used in Cleveland Roof Repairs

Asphalt Shingles

Architectural asphalt shingles dominate Cleveland homes for their affordability and resilience. HEP favors shingles with fiberglass mats for added tensile strength and Class 3 or 4 impact ratings to resist hail.

Metal Flashing

Galvanized steel and aluminum flashing protect valleys, chimneys, and skylight perimeters. HEP specifies minimum 26-gauge steel with a baked-on finish to combat rust caused by lake-effect moisture.

Underlayment Options

Synthetic underlayments offer superior tear resistance compared to traditional felt. HEP often installs a double-layer system:

  • Ice & Water Shield along eaves, valleys, and penetrations
  • Breathable synthetic underlayment over remaining deck areas

This combination promotes moisture control while preventing wind-driven rain infiltration.

Benefits of Professional Roof Repair

Longevity

Addressing minor issues promptly restores the roof’s protective envelope, adding years to its service life. Professional workmanship eliminates weak spots that shorten lifespan.

Energy Efficiency

Sealed roof penetrations, intact ventilation pathways, and reflective shingle surfaces minimize heat transfer, easing HVAC loads during Cleveland’s humid summers and frigid winters.

Structural Protection

Water intrusion can compromise rafters, insulation, and drywall. HEP repairs halt deterioration before costly structural remediation becomes necessary.

Property Value

Prospective buyers often require proof of recent roof maintenance. A documented repair history from a reputable provider like HEP reassures appraisers and real estate agents of ongoing care.

Preventative Maintenance Recommendations

Seasonal Inspections

HEP advises semi-annual inspections—once in spring following winter ice accumulation and again in autumn before heavy snowfall arrives. These inspections identify:

  • Loose or missing shingles
  • Gutter blockages
  • Sealant cracks
  • Early signs of moss or algae growth

Gutter Management

Clogged gutters drive water beneath shingles and along fascia boards. Routine cleaning prevents overflow and reduces ice-dam risks.

Ventilation and Insulation

Balanced intake and exhaust ventilation moderate attic temperatures, preventing condensation and shingle adhesive breakdown. Proper insulation further stabilizes interior conditions, reducing energy costs.

Sustainability and Eco-Friendly Practices

Recycling Old Shingles

HEP partners with recycling facilities that repurpose asphalt shingles into pavement aggregate, diverting tons of waste from Ohio landfills annually.

Energy-Efficient Materials

Cool-roof asphalt blends and metal panels with high solar reflectance decrease heat absorption, contributing to lower cooling demands and reduced carbon footprint.

Building Code Compliance and Permitting in Cleveland

Permit Process Overview

Repair projects exceeding a specific square-foot threshold or involving structural decking replacement typically require municipal permits. HEP handles submission of drawings, scope statements, and material certifications so projects progress without administrative delays.

Code Requirements for Ice Barriers

Cleveland mandates ice-barrier installation extending from the eaves edge to a point at least 24 inches inside the warm wall line of the building. HEP’s crews apply self-adhering membrane that meets thickness and adhesion parameters outlined in local amendments.

Impact of Ventilation Codes

Sufficient attic ventilation is not merely best practice—it is code. HEP calculates net free ventilation area (NFVA) to match roof square footage, balancing soffit intake with ridge or static exhaust vents to satisfy code ratios and prolong shingle life.

Insurance Coordination and Documentation

Storm Damage Claims Support

After hail or wind events, accurate documentation accelerates claim approvals. HEP supplies:

  • Date-stamped drone imagery of impact zones
  • Moisture meter readings indicating decking saturation levels
  • A line-item repair scope linked to manufacturer SKUs

Detailed Reporting

Adjusters receive digital folders containing inspection narratives, photographs, and code citations that justify each recommended repair. This organized data structure streamlines claim processing and helps homeowners secure coverage.

Safety Standards in Roof Repair

Fall Protection Measures

HEP enforces OSHA-compliant safety protocols, including:

  • Harness systems anchored to approved points
  • Guardrails on low-slope commercial roofs
  • Ladder stabilizers to prevent kick-outs

Weather Monitoring Protocols

Crews track real-time radar to avoid thunderstorms and high-wind events. Work halts immediately if lightning is within a 10-mile radius or gusts exceed safe thresholds.

Integration with Other Exterior Systems

Skylights and Sun Tunnels

Improperly flashed skylights often cause persistent leaks. HEP replaces brittle gaskets, installs new sill pans, and ties surrounding underlayment into the existing water-shed plane to preserve natural light without risking moisture intrusion.

Chimney Masonry Interfaces

Cleveland’s freeze-thaw cycle can crack chimney crowns, leading to water seepage behind flashing. HEP grinds out deteriorated mortar joints, repoints with matching masonry mix, and forms new step-flashing shingle by shingle to lock out water.

Soffit and Fascia Upkeep

Repairing roof edges frequently exposes damaged fascia or rotted soffit panels. HEP replaces compromised wood, installs aluminum fascia cladding, and adds vented soffit panels to improve airflow and aesthetics.

Weatherproofing Upgrades During Repair

High-Wind Fastening Patterns

Standard fastening schedules may fail in 80-mph gusts. HEP applies enhanced nailing patterns along rakes and eaves, adding six nails per shingle instead of four to increase pull-through resistance.

Impact-Resistant Accessories

Rubberized pipe-boot flashings flex under hail impact instead of cracking, while Class 4 ridge vents provide an extra barrier against wind uplift. Incorporating these accessories during repair bolsters overall system durability.

Snow Guard Installation

Metal roofs above walkways benefit from snow-retention bars that prevent dangerous sheet-ice slides. HEP sizes and places snow guards according to roof pitch and snow-load calculations, safeguarding entrances and landscaping.

Warranty and Post-Repair Support

Manufacturer Warranties

Many asphalt shingle lines installed by HEP carry limited lifetime warranties covering manufacturing defects. HEP completes all registration paperwork to ensure homeowners receive full protection.

Workmanship Assurance

A dedicated quality-control team reinspects projects at six-month and one-year intervals, verifying ongoing performance and addressing any adjustment needs at no cost.
