FAQs
What is standing-seam metal roofing & siding and how does it differ from exposed-fastener panels?
Standing-seam systems are made from interlocking metal panels whose fasteners are concealed beneath a raised vertical seam. Because the screws are hidden and never penetrate the weathering surface, the panels can expand and contract freely, water cannot back-out around fastener holes, and the finished look is clean and contemporary. In contrast, exposed-fastener panels use visible screws driven through the panel face, which are more prone to long-term leaks and require periodic gasket replacement.
How long will a Pioneer standing-seam roof or wall last, and what kind of warranty is available?
The Galvalume® and premium painted steel we roll-form carries a manufacturer’s finish warranty of up to 40 years, and field studies show life expectancies of 60+ years with minimal maintenance. Because there are no exposed screw holes to enlarge over time, the system often outlasts asphalt shingles two or three times over. Pioneer backs every project with a 30-year limited weather-tightness warranty when the panels are installed by one of our certified crews.
What color, gauge, and profile options can I choose from?
We stock 26-, 24- and 22-gauge steel in more than 30 PVDF (Kynar 500®) colors, plus bare Galvalume® and several matte and metallic finishes. Popular profiles include 1" Snap-Lock, 1.5" Mechanical-Lock, and 2" High-Seam for low-slope commercial roofs. For vertical or horizontal siding, we also offer Flush Panel and V-Groove designs. All panels are roll-formed in-house to custom lengths up to 45' so that most roofs and walls can be covered with single-piece runs.
Is standing-seam metal energy-efficient and environmentally friendly?
Yes. The high emissivity and optional Cool Roof rated coatings reflect up to 70 % of solar heat, lowering attic temperatures and reducing HVAC loads by 10–25 %. The steel contains 25–35 % recycled content and is 100 % recyclable at end-of-life, unlike asphalt shingles that generally end up in landfills. Many owners also integrate rooftop solar because the raised seams provide a perfect anchor point for clamp-on racking—no roof penetrations needed.
Can a standing-seam system be installed over my existing roof or siding?
In many cases, yes. Our Snap-Lock panels can be installed over a solid deck or over existing shingles provided local codes allow and the substrate is sound. A vented underlayment or spacer purlin system is often added to promote airflow and flatten irregularities. For siding retrofits, new hat-channels are fastened through existing cladding to create a level plane and concealed fastener attachment. A Pioneer project manager will inspect your structure and recommend the best approach during the free site visit.
What maintenance does standing-seam metal require and how should I care for it?
Routine upkeep is minimal. We recommend an annual visual check of flashings, gutters and sealant joints, and removal of debris that may trap moisture. Wash the panels with a mild detergent and soft brush as needed; never use abrasive pads or high-pressure washers that could damage the finish. Because the fasteners are concealed, there are no exposed screws to re-tighten. With these simple steps, your Pioneer standing-seam roof or façade will retain its color and performance for decades.
